March On Calls on Senate to Immediately Pass Freedom to Vote Act at #NoMoreExcuses Civil Disobedience Action in Washington, D.C.

Andi Pringle: “It is time that every person who was elected to defend democracy stands up and makes good on their oath.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, March On participates in a #NoMoreExcuses Civil Disobedience Action at the White House to demand passage of the Freedom to Vote Act, which is likely to take place in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday.

Andi Pringle, Political and Strategic Campaigns Director of March On, in attendance at today’s civil disobedience action, issued the following statement:

“Voter suppression laws are mounting around the country, and our democracy hangs by a thread. By establishing barriers that restrict when people can vote and how they can vote, state legislatures are building barriers restricting who can vote. That is by design; these laws are a power grab by a group of people whose ideas can no longer win a majority on their own merits.

“Nothing else that we are fighting for—infrastructure, healthcare, higher minimum wage, reproductive rights—will matter if Congress does not protect voting rights. Winning this fight is the obstacle that stands in the way of all progress in our country, and it is time that every person who was elected to defend democracy stands up and makes good on their oath.

“The Freedom to Vote Act is a fair, common sense approach to protecting the rights of every voter. We call on the Senate to pass it immediately and by any means necessary. No more excuses.”

Today’s action is organized by the League of Women Voters, People For the American Way, Declaration for American Democracy, Black Voters Matter and Democracy Initiative. On August 28, March On, with a coalition of more than 200 partners—including the Drum Major Institute, SEIU and National Action Network—organized a nationwide March On for Voting Rights, which resulted in marches and actions in more than 100 towns and cities around the country to demand passage of federal voting rights legislation.
